Stocks Begin The Week Quietly

Aug 12, 2024 | Market Commentary

Friends

We have a busy economic calendar this week with the all-important Consumer Price Index release on Wednesday and then on Thursday we get a look at retail sales. Ideally, the inflation data will continue to show improvement while at the same time the consumer remains viable. We will see.

As for today, stocks were mostly lower with the Dow Jones Industrial Average down 140 points to close at 39,357. The S&P 500 was up a fraction to finish the day at 5,344. The Nasdaq was up 35 points to close at 16,780 . Gold was up $37 to trade at $2,511 per ounce, while oil was up $3.00 to trade at $79.84 per barrel WTI.

As we have mentioned it is likely we will see more volatility for a while. Let’s see how things unfold over the coming days.

Have a nice evening everyone.
