Stocks Ease Higher As Investors Wait For Retail Earnings

Aug 14, 2023 | Market Commentary

Friends

It was a pretty quiet day of trading with the market averages leaning higher. This week we will get a good read on the retail sector as we’ll get earnings releases from Home Depot tomorrow, Target and TJ Maxx on Wednesday and Walmart on Thursday. Will the consumer continue to hold up this economy? Let’s see what some of our biggest retailers have to say.

As for today, by the close the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 26 points to finish the day at 35,307. The S&P 500 was up 25 points to close at 4,489. The Nasdaq Composite Index was up 143 points to close at 13,788. Gold was down $6 to trade at $1,939 per ounce, while oil was down $.73 to trade at $82.46 per barrel WTI.

It will be interesting to see if the bears can build on the modest momentum they had accumulated as we enter the trading week, or is today sign that they are already losing their grip? We will be watching those retail earnings reports and let you know how the week unfolds. Stay tuned.

Have a nice evening everyone.
