Stocks Mixed/News Mixed

Nov 18, 2021 | Market Commentary

Friends

Stocks were mixed today and trading was rather quiet. We continue to get good earnings numbers from retailers, today Macy’s and Kohl’s and shares of both companies did very well, and today’s economic data was also helpful with the Philly Fed Manufacturing Index number coming in much better than expected as did leading indicators and initial jobless claims. Offsetting the good news is the concerning increase in Covid-19 cases around the world. That story doesn’t appear to be over yet.

As for today, by the close the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 60 points to finish the day at 35,870. The S&P 500 was up 15 points to close at 4,704. The Nasdaq Composite Index was up 72 points to close at 15,993. Gold was down $8 to trade at $1,861 per ounce, while oil was up $.63 to trade at $78.99 per barrel WTI.

Despite good numbers and good share price performance from most retailers who reported this week, stocks have been somewhat directionless this week. Let’s see how the week finishes out tomorrow.

Have a nice evening everyone.
